Trip.

I’ll be honest, I’ve kind of be putting this one off.  I’m not sure I can really put into words how great of a trip we had.   But I guess I’ll try.  I’ll admit-  this probably won’t be the funniest, most insightful, wittiest post you’ll read, but they can’t all be winners now can they?

Before we left (as many of you have read/already known) we had such an insane few weeks. The last few days were especially crazy as we quickly tried to figure out stuff with the car accident/had to constantly be on the phone with insurance adjusters/movers/laundry people (who washed every.single.article of our clothing and bedding) figuring out flood stuff and what we should claim, what we could keep, when they could drop it off, etc.  We also had everything dropped off at our new apartment the Friday before we left (we left Friday night for Whitby).  And to top it off, I was getting sicker and sicker and all I really wanted to do was be in the fetal position under a large blanket in my bed. There were two problems with this:

  1.  We had no bed
  2.  We had no blankets

After work on Friday, Ben and I went to our new apartment and tore through all our clothes/boxes trying to find stuff to pack for the trip.  This is how we left our new place the night we left:

nice right? That means this is ALSO what it looked like when we came home…

But then, once we drove away, the vacation could begin.  We had a great time that weekend celebrating Dustin’s birthday at home with my family, and then Sunday we flew off to Cancun.

Honestly? I’m pretty sure the MINUTE we got there, I was 100% better. (Physically, emotionally, mentally)  The warm air was unbelievably refreshing.  We moved our suitcases in and then went down to the lobby for the first  (of many) cervezas.  (Umm, is it bad that pretty much the only spanish word we learned was for beer?)

We spent most of our mornings and afternoons doing this:

Mixed in with lots of swimming in the ocean, playing beach volleyball, grabbing wings and fries at the snack bar and then more napping on the beach.

I thought that I might at some point get bored of just relaxing.  But I didn’t even once.  I think partly because we were so exhausted coming into the trip I needed the break.  And partly because I think it’s just a healthy thing to do once in a while.  Park your butt somewhere and soak up sun.  So I did.  And I’ll admit, I worked on my tan like it was my job.   (And I might add, I TOTALLY beat out Ben in our usual “who’s darker” competition. He even go so desperate one day he went without sunscreen….rookie mistake)

Getting into Cancun from our hotel was a quick $.65 trip on a bus, so we hit up the markets/restaurants/sites of Cancun a few times.

We checked out Mayan Ruins (Chichen-Itza) for a day.  Probably my highlight of this trip was that there was this really cool architectural thing with the pyramid that if you clapped within a certain distance of it, the echo would come back sounding like a bird.  (there was a significance to that….but I kind of stopped paying attention to our long winded tour guide).  So anyway – because of this- there were always tons of people clapping around the pyramid, and Ben….being the Ben we know and love, thought it was funny to just randomly clap REALLY loudly no matter how close or far (really far…) to the pyramid we were.  As with several of our outings, it was at this point that I kind of slowly drifted away from him and pretended I was with a different group of people.

We went snorkelling another day.  (I don’t have pictures of that yet-they’re on the camera that WON’T break down when you put it underwater…)  This? This was definitely a highlight.  I mean, I’ve seen pictures and posters of snorkelling before and it always looked cool – but to actually do it was incredible.  There really is a whole other world a few inches under the water. Who would’ve thought?

Our nights were spent hanging out in the sports bar or the lobby, either playing games just the two of us, or hanging out with a great group of people -which we did most nights.  It was fun to just kick back with new friends, laughing, and just being.  No responsibilities. No titles.  No looming deadlines or events.  Just being us.
