As I’ve previously mentioned, we have a tenant in our basement apartment. This is really exciting for lots of reasons:
1) Because it means we finally finished working on the basement apartment and made it look quite less ugly. And now we have our evenings back. Seriously, I was getting pretty sick of getting home from work, and heading down to the cave basement to do work. To be honest, Ben did 90% of it, so I shouldn’t complain, but it just wasn’t fun for me to paint and paint and paint, or rip up baseboards, or help Ben remove the gross toilet, or look at floor sample after floor sample. But it’s done. Thank the Good Lord.
2) Because she is pretty much paying our mortgage. Not entirely, but a large portion of it. And this is wonderful.
3) Because it’s a relief. Although we’ve planned on having a tenant ever since we bought the house, you just never know what’s going to happen. I had fears of having no one be interested in living our place, and then we’d have to re-think our entire budget. But it happened within ONE day of advertising (actually, she contacted us within one hour), and it really is a relief to know that for at least one year we’ll have that extra income.
4) Because she seems really nice. And really, when you have someone else living in your home, wouldn’t you want them to be really nice?
And it’s important for me to remember all these great reasons why we like having a tenant. Why you ask? Because it puts into perspective the fact that she practices her french horn for hours each night. And I guess that’s a small price to pay for all the good things I just listed. Plus, she doesn’t suck, so really, it’s just like a free orchestra concert every.single.night…
…Yup, it’s all about perspective.
